About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Engineer to join our dynamic team at W Digital. In this role, you will play a critical part in designing, building, and improving our complex digital systems. The team provides events and audience management in Woolworths and provides services for digital behaviour analytics teams. You will be a technical leader, guiding your team through challenging projects and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Architectural Strategy & Vision: Lead the design of complex software systems, advocating for a "target state" architecture that prioritizes resilience, security, scalability, and cost-effectiveness across the domain.

• Technical Leadership & Execution: Drive the end-to-end development of innovative solutions to address complex technical challenges, ensuring all implementations align with business needs and engineering best practices.

• Mentorship & Collaborative Culture: Provide high-level technical guidance and mentorship to engineers, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration within your squad and across upstream/downstream partners.

• Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with product managers, designers, and architects to translate business requirements into exceptional digital experiences, bridging the gap between technical constraints and product goals.

• Engineering Excellence & Innovation: Champion the evolution of engineering practices and the adoption of emerging technologies to continuously improve team efficiency, system quality, and operational scalability.

About You

You are a passionate and experienced engineer with a proven track record of success in delivering high-impact solutions. You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy guiding and mentoring others. You are also a proactive problem solver with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to technical excellence.

Essential Skills and Experience:

• Strategic Technical Leadership: 5+ years of experience as a Tech Lead or Staff Engineer, with a proven track record of steering multi-squad technical roadmaps, guiding engineering teams, and defining architectural "target states" in Agile environments.

• Node.js & Data Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript, with deep experience building high-performance asynchronous APIs and microservices utilizing both SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., Firestore, MongoDB, PostgreSQL).

• Cloud-Native Architecture: Extensive experience with enterprise cloud platforms (GCP preferred), specifically leveraging container orchestration and serverless ecosystems like Cloud Run/GKE/ECS to build scalable systems.

• Event-Driven & MarTech Systems: Experience in Event Ingestion, Audience Management, or Clickstream Tracking; familiarity with retail/e-commerce domains and platforms like Tealium/Google Analytics  is highly advantageous.

• DevOps & Engineering Excellence: Hands-on expertise in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and CI/CD automation (GitHub), coupled with excellent communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
