Welcome to BigW

For over 50 years, we’ve been helping Aussie families find those little wins. Who makes it all happen? Our team. They’re our biggest asset, the heart of everything we do. From new ideas to big energy and genuine care, they bring it every day, on every shift, at every shelf and in every customer moment.

We’re part of the largest Australian employer group, a community icon, and our scale opens the door to career possibilities as big as your ambition. Whether you’re on the shop floor, in one of our dynamic support offices, or a bustling distribution centre, we’ll back you to grow, make an impact, and feel proud to be part of something that truly matters.

Think you’d look good in blue? A career at BIG W could be the perfect gig for you.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Solutions Architect at BigWX, you are at the heart of Big W’s strategic evolution into a purpose-led, digital-first retailer. Your primary mission is to steer the transformation of our rapidly growing eCommerce platform into a modern, high-performing service architecture that balances innovation with resilience. By acting as the critical bridge between ambitious business objectives and technical execution, you will define long-term strategies and utilize Domain-Driven Design to deconstruct complex systems into simple, maintainable solutions.

Your success in this role depends on a sophisticated balancing act: designing architectures that are technically elegant yet grounded in commercial reality and operational constraints. You are expected to be a pragmatic visionary who ensures that every technical decision maximizes user value without compromising speed-to-market or stability. Beyond the technical blueprint, you are a collaborative leader and mentor who fosters a culture of transparency and mutual respect, influencing stakeholders and guiding engineering teams to deliver sustainable, high-impact results that earn our customers' trust.

What you’ll do

  • Solution Architecture & Simplification: Lead the end-to-end design of complex systems, distilling high organizational complexity into clear, flexible, and actionable blueprints that minimize technical debt.

  • Strategic & Business Alignment: Translate business and user needs into feasible architectures, balancing technical innovation with budgets, speed to market, and performance.

  • Leadership & Stakeholder Influence: Act as a primary technical authority, mentoring engineering teams while clearly communicating complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders to build consensus.

  • Security, Risk & Compliance: Embed robust security and privacy principles into the foundation of all designs, proactively mitigating risks and ensuring alignment with industry standards.

What You’ll Bring

  • A Seasoned Architect: You have a proven track record of designing and deploying large-scale, distributed systems, with the ability to show how your architectural choices drove business success. Backed up by at least 10 years of industry experience, with some of that experience in a hand-on role.

  • Complex Problem Solver: You have a natural knack for cutting through ambiguity and technical "noise," distilling complex requirements into elegant, simple, and executable designs.

  • Security-First Thinker: Security isn't a post-script for you; you intuitively apply Security by Design principles to ensure every solution is resilient and protected from the ground up.

  • Pragmatic Visionary: You possess the rare ability to think five years ahead while staying grounded in today’s delivery constraints, ensuring long-term strategy never stalls immediate progress.

  • Influential Communicator: You are comfortable speaking "business" to stakeholders and "code" to engineers, moving seamlessly between the two to build consensus and drive alignment.

  • Empathetic Leader: You lead through influence rather than authority, enjoying the mentorship of others and thriving in a culture of high trust and professional respect.

  • Continuous Learner: You are a natural technologist who stays ahead of industry trends, not just for the sake of novelty, but to find better ways to solve real-world problems.

  • Comfortable working within and improving the BigWX design and engineering framework
