The Opportunity

This is a pivotal role, acting as a key strategic partner to the GM Commercial Finance and the Directors of Grocery and Fresh across W Retail. You will be instrumental in driving business performance (primarily Sales and GP across all of W Retail) and shaping strategy, focusing on identifying and pursuing sustainable future revenue streams and the next stage of growth.

You will lead and develop a team, serve as the 2IC to the GM Commercial Finance with senior delegation authority and own crucial financial insights including Overheads, Capital and Working Capital. A significant part of the role involves driving the future of finance by leveraging AI and automation to step change the delivery and actioning of sales and profit performance across the commercial function.


What you’ll do

  • Drive Financial Performance & Reporting: Steer the delivery of $55B in Sales, $20B in GPBF and $180M in OH targets, providing insightful analysis, commercial recommendations and leading regular business performance reviews to resolve issues and ensure initiative success.

  • Lead Planning & Forecasting Cycle: Own and manage the end to end Annual Operating Plan (AOP) process, ensuring strategic alignment and drive the monthly and weekly forecasting cycles to provide early insight on key drivers for timely course correction and cost control.

  • Provide Strategic Decision Support: Identify and drive key profit drivers and opportunities for business improvement across all sales categories, ensuring that long term financial targets are backed by sound strategic thinking and strong business cases.

  • Elevate Continuous Improvement: Lead change by identifying and implementing process improvements and system enhancements to achieve a standard, lean and efficient operating model in collaboration with Group Systems and Data teams and ensuring data integrity across finance.

  • Strategic Stakeholder Partnership: Work closely with the Commercial Leadership Team, GM Commercial Finance, and multiple partner teams (e.g., Meat, eCom, Loyalty, Format) to align strategic goals, understand performance drivers and ensure adherence to financial controls.

  • Lead and Develop the Team: Provide strong leadership, coaching and mentoring to the commercial finance team, fostering a culture of high performance and managing change effectively across multiple stakeholder groups.


What you’ll bring 


We are looking for a seasoned candidate with a minimum of 1 year of lived in experience in a similar Head Of role with demonstrated Commercial experience.

  • Proven Strategic Leadership & Commercial Acumen: Extensive experience) in a large, complex and fast moving commercial sales retail environment. You must possess advanced skills in strategy development, making complex commercial decisions and translating external trends into actionable insights.

  • Exceptional Business Partnering & Influence: Demonstrated ability to act as a strategic partner to senior leadership, leveraging advanced influencing and negotiating skills to shape the business agenda and ensure financial insights drive key decisions from concept through implementation.

  • Financial Expertise & Execution: A CA/CPA qualification paired with the ability to see the big picture, ensure sound financial planning and expertly manage projects to deliver outcomes on time and to budget.

  • Focus on Innovation and Continuous Improvement: A strong Agile and Growth Mindset, demonstrating the courage to innovate and think creatively (e.g. leveraging AI/automation) and driving the maintenance and enhancement of financial systems for improved process efficiency.

  • Advanced People Leadership: Proven experience in managing and coaching a multi functional team, providing advanced mentoring and development and setting challenging goals to foster continuous growth and high performance within the team.

  • Superior Communication & Analytical Skills: Advanced analytical and problem solving capabilities coupled with the ability to communicate complex financial information simply and effectively to a broad audience, ensuring clear understanding and prioritised focus on key business requirements.
