We are Woolworths Group. 200,000+ bright minds, passionate hearts, and unique perspectives across Australia and New Zealand. Connected by a shared Purpose - 'to create better experiences together for a better tomorrow'. That Purpose fuels our ambition to explore new ideas, make brave commitments, and innovate better ways to meet the food and everyday needs of more than 24 million customers every week.

If you're excited to turn today's blue-sky thinking into a better tomorrow for future generations, you'll find yourself supported and enriched in a dynamic, inclusive, and empowering workplace. With a culture of genuine care, a flexible approach to work, and opportunities across the group to grow your career and make a meaningful impact, the possibilities for what we can achieve together are endless.

What you’ll do

As one of the largest Finance functions in Corporate Australia, we provide opportunities across Corporate Finance, Shared Services, Commercial Finance, Capital Management, Financial Control, Operations Finance, Project Finance, M&A, and Strategy and Planning.

We operate in a fast-paced, agile environment with professionals who work collaboratively to achieve market-leading outcomes. Our point of difference is that we are part of Australia's largest retailer allowing us to provide unparalleled career opportunities. The Woolworths Finance team is positioned to support change and continuous improvement across the business while continually focusing on providing excellent customer experiences to key stakeholders.

As a Data & AI Engineer, you will contribute across data engineering, analytics, and applied AI - working directly with Finance business units to solve real problems with real commercial consequences. This role goes beyond traditional data engineering - you will work end-to-end: from business requirements through to governed, production solutions. This role exists to accelerate our transition to a decision-intelligence capability - combining governed data, semantic models, and AI to move from reporting to actionable insights.

  • Design and maintain analytics-ready data models on top of certified core datasets, serving as a trusted layer for Finance decision-making - reducing reconciliation issues and eliminating fragmented versions of the truth.

  • Contribute to the semantic layer - developing Looker explores, measures, and dimensions that abstract complexity away from Finance users and enable genuine self-serve analytics across the organisation.

  • Build and maintain production-grade transformations and orchestrated workflows using Dataform, SQL, and Cloud Composer - leveraging Cloud Functions and Cloud Run for API-based and event-driven patterns.

  • Work with stakeholders to translate Finance business problems into concrete data and AI solutions - contributing through discovery, design, and delivery.

  • Support the build and deployment of AI-driven capabilities grounded in governed Finance data: automated financial commentary, variance explanation, scenario modelling and ROI simulation using Vertex AI, Gemini, and BigQuery ML.

  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate solution design and delivery - with the engineering judgment to review, validate, and ensure all outputs meet business requirements, performance expectations, and governance standards. AI is an accelerator, not a substitute.

  • Operate within a hub-and-spoke model - building on governed central data platforms while partnering directly with Finance Business Units to solve problems and deliver outcomes in context.

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and engineering best practices - ensuring solutions are maintainable, well-documented, and production-ready.

What you’ll bring

We're looking for a technically capable, curious engineer eager to grow - someone motivated by solving real business problems and building production-quality solutions.

  • 3-5 years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a closely related discipline.

  • Strong SQL and cloud data platform experience - GCP and BigQuery strongly preferred; you design clean, maintainable, trusted models.

  • Dataform or dbt experience or equivalent SQL-first transformation framework in a modern data stack.

  • Cloud Functions and Cloud Run - familiarity with API-based and event-driven architectures within GCP.

  • GitHub and CI/CD - DevOps practices including version control, code review, and automated deployment pipelines.

  • Semantic layer experience - Looker or equivalent; you understand why the abstraction matters, not just how to write LookML.

  • GenAI foundations (must-have) - hands-on experience with Vertex AI, Gemini, RAG architectures and/or BigQuery ML. Experience building and deploying real use cases (e.g. financial commentary, Q&A over data, decision support).

  • Agentic AI (nice to have) - exposure to multi-step AI workflows using agents, tool use, and orchestration frameworks is a plus.

  • AI-assisted development - comfortable using AI coding tools to accelerate delivery, with the engineering judgment to validate outputs and ensure they meet requirements and governance standards.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement - comfortable contributing to discovery sessions and supporting solution design in collaboration with business and technical teams.

  • Demonstrates accountability and a desire to grow ownership over time.
