The Opportunity
As the Engineer for the Windows Server Fleet, you will own the lifecycle, scalability, and "developer experience" of our core operating system environment. You will bridge the gap between Engineering (building the automation/images) and
Operations (ensuring 99.9% uptime and compliance). Your goal is to treat our server fleet as a product: ensuring it is easy to consume via code (IaC), inherently secure, and cost-optimized in Azure & GCP
What you’ll do
- Platform Roadmap: Define the "Golden Path" for Windows Server deployment. Decide when to deprecate older OS versions and how to transition teams to modern architectures (e.g., Core, Containers, or Azure Edition).
- Infrastructure as Product: Partner with Engineering to ensure Windows Server is "consumable" via Woolworths’ automation tooling (Terraform/Ansible/Machine Config. You aren't just delivering a Virtual Machine; you are delivering an automated service.
- DevOps Orchestration: Own the Azure DevOps pipelines that handle image factory builds (Packer), automated testing, and fleet-wide patch orchestration.
- Security & Compliance: Act as the primary interface for Security teams. Translate complex regulatory requirements (CIS benchmarks) into actionable engineering backlogs for automated remediation.
- Operational Excellence: Use Woolworths current reporting & monitoring tools to derive product insights. Identify "noisy" segments of the fleet and prioritise engineering fixes to reduce operational "toil."
What you’ll bring
- Experience: 7+ years in IT Infrastructure or Software Engineering, with at least 2–3 years in a Product Environment or Technical Architecture role.
- Degree in CS or equivalent; Microsoft Certifications (AZ-800/801 or AZ- 305) are a significant plus.
- Soft Skills: A "consultant" mindset.
Technical Domain Authority
- Windows Server Ecosystem: Deep knowledge of WS 2019/2022, Active Directory/Entra ID, and PowerShell. You must understand the "legacy" enough to migrate it and the "modern" enough to automate it.
- Azure Cloud Native: Hands-on experience with Azure Compute (AVS, Scale Sets), Azure Policy, and Azure Arc for hybrid management.
- The "IaC" Mindset: Proven experience moving teams from "click-ops" to code-based deployments using Terraform.
Product Management Craft
- Stakeholder Management: Experience balancing the conflicting needs of App Devs (who want speed) and Security/Ops (who want stability).
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Ability to use telemetry to justify platform investments (e.g., "Moving to Azure Edition will reduce reboot times by $X$ and save $Y$ in licensing").
- Backlog Governance: Proficiency in JIRA to manage sprints, feature requests, and technical debt.
Security First Philosophy
- Experience with DevSecOps—integrating vulnerability scanning and policy- as-code into the deployment pipeline so that security is "invisible" to the end user.
