With a culture of genuine care, a flexible approach to work and opportunities across the group to grow your career and make a meaningful impact, the possibilities for what we can achieve together are endless.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Data Engineer to join our dynamic team at W Digital. In this role, you will play a critical part in designing, building, and improving our complex digital systems. You will be a senior engineer, guiding your team through challenging projects and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable solutions.

What you’ll do

  • Design, build, and optimize high-performance, secure data pipelines and architectures on GCP, leveraging a robust stack including Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Tasks to ensure enterprise-level scalability.

  • Lead the integration of third-party systems and internal services by implementing sophisticated event-driven patterns using Pub/Sub, Eventarc, and Datastream for real-time data flow.

  • Establish and enforce rigorous best practices across the full development lifecycle, including CI/CD automation, comprehensive testing, proactive monitoring, and detailed documentation to ensure system reliability.

  • Own the end-to-end design and delivery of data solutions, partnering closely with cross-functional teams to streamline data ingestion, enhance accessibility, and guarantee high data quality.

  • Embed robust data governance and security protocols across all platforms, ensuring that every solution meets strict compliance standards and utilizes secure configuration management via Secret Manager.

  • Mentor mid-level developers through meaningful code reviews and knowledge sharing, while maintaining a competitive edge by exploring emerging technologies and pursuing advanced certifications during dedicated learning time.

What You’ll Bring

  • 7+ years of experience in backend development, featuring mastery of SQL and proficiency in languages such as Python and Go to build robust data solutions.

  • Proven track record of deploying scalable services on GCP (Cloud Run, GKE) using a modern Infrastructure-as-Code approach with Terraform and GitHub-driven CI/CD pipelines.

  • Expertise in designing event-driven architectures utilizing Pub/Sub and Workflows, with a deep understanding of both Relational (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (Firestore, Bigtable) database ecosystems.

  • A "security-by-design" mindset, with the ability to embed strict data governance, privacy, and compliance standards into the core of every data platform you build.

  • The ability to design scalable, maintainable architectures while autonomously managing competing priorities in business-critical, high-pressure environments.

  • Strong communication skills with a demonstrated ability to bridge the gap between technical complexity and non-technical stakeholder requirements.

What you’ll experience

  • A commitment to flexibility through a hybrid working model which combines time spent at a support office or hub and time working from home, supporting both in-person connection and balancing the flexibility that remote working provides for our teams.

  • High-impact role supporting our teams who enrich our communities.

  • A global business with endless career possibilities around every corner and across every discipline – with valuable exposure to a vast and exciting business network.

  • A range of programs to help you prioritise and manage your wellbeing, including 24/7 access to the Sonder app.

  • A progressive and competitive leave policy that gives you more space for what matters to you.

  • Team discounts across our range of Woolworths Group brands you know and love and a robust rewards program that celebrates and incentivises purpose-driven work.
